A New Parent’s Guide to Infant Massages

Welcoming your first child to the world is a monumental event, but you will soon learn that parenthood is tough. It is not easy getting the hang of having a new baby around, especially one that is fussy and requires round-the-clock care. Still, you want the best for your precious baby, and that means helping them relax and sleep better, and ensuring that you build strong bonds as early as possible.

One of the best ways to interact with your baby and grow a parental bond is through infant massages. You may be familiar with it, as it is highly encouraged by holistic and childcare specialists. It entails using a baby massage oil to gently knead, rub, and flex your baby’s skin. While it may sound simple in theory, there are a couple of things you need to know to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Prepare Your Baby

With children, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Always consult with your pediatrician before trying new things, whether it is a massage, trendy baby food, or the like. If your baby’s gestation period was less than 32 weeks or it weighs less than 3 pounds, you should practice extra precaution. That’s because such babies may be too weak to experience an infant massage. Generally, babies who weigh past the 3-pound mark are safe as long as they do not have any underlying health conditions that may be aggravated by slight pressure. Additionally, ensure that your baby does not have a fever of over 100 degrees, and wait 30 minutes after feeding before starting a massage.

Choose Organic Baby Massage Oil

A baby massage oil is essential as it will help you glide onto your baby’s skin much more comfortably. Organic oils are also helpful in moisturizing babies’ skin, erasing scars, and preventing dryness. However, you have to be careful about picking your oil. Choose one with naturally-derived ingredients such as fruit and vegetable oils, and avoid using anything perfumed on babies under three months old. If your baby has eczema, then you need to choose a baby massage oil that is safe for eczema-prone skin. Massage gently and take note of how your infant reacts to each part. Keep their favourite motions in mind and avoid anything that they seem to dislike. Furthermore, start with very gentle pressure on newborns and increase it by a small margin as they get older.

Prepare the Ambiance

Believe it or not, babies can sense the mood and ambience of a room. The best space for infant massages should be warm enough that your baby will not feel cold despite being undressed. You also want to have enough space to be able to rub each area of their body, including their stomach, back, and limbs. A sanitary towel or blanket underneath will help control the environment, ensure its cleanliness, and offer a consistent fabric for your child to remember in the future. That way, they will understand whenever it is time for an infant massage and will adjust their mood accordingly. Additionally, playing some calming music in the background is a beautiful way to establish a soothing environment.

A gentle massage will help calm fussy babies, prevent them from crying, and offers a simulative way of communicating with your infant. While it will be a long while before they learn to say simple words like “mama,” or”papa,” building strong bonds, early-on, will establish a sense of familiarity and warmth. Before you know it, your baby will be all grown up, walking, and off to school.
