Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Grandma’s birthday party, somehow (again) you’re on babysitting duty. Well, it doesn’t have to be as frustrating as you think. In fact, it can actually be a breeze if you can find really cool games for babies. If you’re afraid you can’t, here are 3 ways to entertain your little cousins or nieces and nephews at family gatherings.
Like mentioned before, if you can find games for babies, your job is already complete. But there are a million online gaming sites for both babies and the older kiddos. Just triple-check that the games are free, safe, and appropriate so your family won’t be upset. Gaming doesn’t always have to be online too. You can bring out the old board games you used to play as a child and see if anyone wants to give it a try.
Kids usually love it when an adult joins in on the fun, so if you seem excited about, they’ll instantly jump in too. You can also have a few playing online games and the other playing board games with you. It would be smart to put the younger kids on the online games as they’ll be occupied for hours.

Nope, they are not too old, not even teenagers. All humans love stories, and the younger humans are no exception. Make up the silliest, goofiest story you can think of and tell it to the kiddos. They’ll find you hilarious or dorky, but either way, it’ll have them sitting quietly for at least an hour. Once you’re done with your story, have them tell you a funny story. They’ll like the opportunity to make you laugh.
A really great game would be for you all to try telling a story together. So you all sit in a circle and someone starts the story off with a typical story like, “Once upon a time” or “On a cold, stormy night.” The next person has to add to the story and so on until it’s complete. The kids will love being able to be a part of something so fun and silly, and the time will fly by.

If all else fails and the kids are nagging you to be entertained, see if you can find an old photo album and tell them stories about life before they were born. Show them photos of their parents when they were young and tell them how they behaved as well. If you can, find pictures of your grandma or their grandma when she was younger. That will really interest them. If you don’t have a photo album, then just tell the stories instead. The kids will find it fascinating that people had entire lives before they even existed, and they’ll be asking you questions about it for hours—so be prepared. Feel free to grab an older family member as well and have them sit awhile to answer questions or add to your stories.
If you get stuck on babysitting duty at your next family function, don’t let it bum you out. Kids aren’t as scary as you think, and they can be easily entertained. Just try one or all the ideas above and it’ll be time for grandma’s famous cheesecake in no time.
